When manufacturing all different types of sheet, it is of great importance to observe variations in products actual dimensions. This requires a reliable measuring system with high accuracy and high repeatability. In systems integrated in line of production handling a wide range of various formats, there are also requirements of fast and precise positioning and calibrating.

In this particular example the measuring system is a build-in system in line of production. The system automatically measures, thickness, length, width and calculates the diagonal of the

passing metal sheets.

A prerequisite for measuring with narrow tolerances is the fixation of current object.

All measuring equipment is mounted on carriages. The carriages are positioned precisely and smoothly on ball rail systems based on a gantry granite frame construction. The construction stands firmly on ground without interfering vibrations from other dynamic processes.

All measuring are executed automatically when a metal sheet enters the gantry. An automatic calibration of the laser sensors is performed when ordered.

• Thickness is measured at three different points. Differential lasers - two for each point - measuring dimension by difference. 
• The length is measured by laser sensors in combination with linear encoders.
• Width dimension is measured by shadow principal in combination with a magnetic scale, firmly mounted on the granite gantry.

The sheets are passing the gantry vertically standing on the side. When measuring, the object has to be fixed in certain directions. For fixation, four vertical roller mills are centring the object by pressing the sheet with an individual calculated pressure.

 

Two sheets are processed at the same time. Meanwhile
Sheet 1 almost is completely measured, sheet 2
approaches the gantry and becomes fixed by the first roller mill.
