Fully automatic sampling system

Sampling system for hot and cold rolled coils and sheets

The system provides for a fully automatic sampling, marking, spectro analysing, thickness control and preparation of steel samples ready for all type of mechanical and chemical testing.

MSE:s new developed sample cutting station for cutting out all types of test
blanks needed in the process

The station is built up as a robot cell with the robot located in the centre. The robot transports the stripes to and from the different work elements located around it.

A total sampling system consists of separate installations, one station in each line, for picking out and marking the stripes close to the in-line shears and one common station for cutting samples from the stripes. In the common dividing station a robot is handling the stripe through the whole process starting with identity check up by spectro analysis and a thickness control.

Picker and stripe marking station which will be adapted to the production line

After marking the stripe with individual sample numbers a high pressure abrasive water jet cuts out all kind of samples for mechanical and chemical testing.

All stations built in the process are each controlled by a PC, connected to the upper level systems. The only manual work is the fork lift transport of samples. All operations at the stations are automatically verified, implying that if occasionally a sample is missing or an identification is not readable alarms are given and the stations are manually operated. The stations are designed for heavy duty operation and comprise well proven components like a robot of ABB robotics, analysing instrument from Specto-Nordic, laser sensors from LMI etc.

Cost effective solution

Low operating costs, high availability, savings in manpower and classified scrap provide a pay-off less then a year. Additionally a shortening of the delivery time and a significant upgrading of the quality control will positively contribute to the cost-benefit analysis of this investment.
